GMC Sierra EV: the revolution has begun

It was only a matter of time before GMC unveiled the electric version of its Sierra pickup, especially since its cousin Chevrolet did it with its Silverado model. There weren't as many surprises, but the information about the product was just as impressive.

Basically, it's quite a beast that awaits us. It will make its debut in 2024 in the United States as a one-off edition. In 2025, it will come to us in a larger way. The model that was presented is the American version, but the one that will end up here will have more or less the same characteristics.

About the latter, here are five things that caught our attention.

The horses

No matter how many 300, 400 or 500 horsepower models we see on the road, we are always amazed at how powerful today's vehicles are. And it's even more the case with electric creations. Except that the GMC Sierra EV pushes the envelope with a maximum capacity of 754 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque. That will be enough to allow a 0-97 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

This brute force will be possible by selecting Max Power mode, one of five settings offered with the vehicle (the others being Standard, Tow/Haul, Off Road and My Mode).

Towing

And what will a Sierra EV pickup truck be able to tow, at a minimum? The advertised capacity is at 9500 pounds, which is very good. The payload is not to be outdone at 1300 pounds. Most importantly, you won't lose too much of the expected 400 miles (644 km) of range when towing loads. In fact, GMC claims that the ratio will be the same as with a gasoline model. So, if a gas-powered Sierra gets a 35% increase in fuel consumption with a given load, it will get a 35% decrease in range with the same load in the back. This is clear and reassuring.

Technology

Inside, we'll discover a rich environment that's also highly technological. Of course, the cameras will offer everything you need to make towing easier, and GMC's software that allows you to remember everything will be part of the package. So will our favorite apps, and there will be plenty of wireless connectivity options. At the center console, a 16.8-inch multimedia screen will dominate the scene; it's the largest in history for a GMC vehicle. In the windshield, the space reserved for the head-up display will be 14 inches. Finally, an 11-inch digital display will be located in the instrument cluster in front of the driver.

Charging

Thanks to an 800-volt architecture and the presence of an integrated 19.2 kW charger, when you go to a 350 kW charging station, you will be able to recover 160 km of autonomy in only 10 minutes. That's really in the ballpark.

And at home, the system's bi-directional capacity will allow the vehicle to power the house when needed. And thanks to the Onboard Power Station Pro system, which will offer a 10.2 kW capacity, it will be possible to plug in up to 10 devices on the construction site.

The box

Finally, a few words about the versatility of the box. In addition to providing storage space and outlets for appliances, it can be extended in two ways. First, it can be extended from 5' 11" to 9' by lowering the bulkhead between the box and the cab. Then, the tailgate can be lowered to add 2 feet to the capacity.

Truly impressive.
