2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra: an even more efficient 2.7-litre 4-cylinder
April 21 2022,
In the past, it would have been unthinkable to rely on a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as the base solution for a full-size pickup truck. Times have changed, however, and within the General Motors (GM) group, it has become the norm.
In fact, for 2022, the 2.7-liter engine is standard under the hood of most models offered by Chevrolet and GMC. This is the case with the WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST and LT Trail Boss models at Chevrolet, Pro, SLE and Elevation at GMC.
And that's great news for those who want exceptional performance and efficiency at the pump. Why? Because the powertrain performance has been improved for 2022. Here's how.
Strength and durability
The block of this 2.7-liter engine has been reworked, so the crankshaft is 30 percent stiffer. Techniques developed for diesel powertrains were also used to increase power and durability.
Power
All of this has had an effect on torque output, which jumps from 348 to 420 lb-ft, a jump of about 20 percent. The result is sharper acceleration and greater flexibility when towing (capacity ranges from 9,000 to 9,600 pounds, depending on version). The eight-speed transmission, which is mated to the engine, has also been overhauled and offers faster and more precise downshifts, among other things.
GM also promises smoother performance, as well as a quieter engine.
And of course, there's that lower fuel consumption with the 2.7-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine.
All in all, it's the most versatile engine in the lineup, and it's now standard on most models. Efficiency and power are the order of the day. To realize just how much, come see us at the dealership and get behind the wheel of a model.
